Nortel Get Castrated!
Oops, that’s what happens when you use voice recognition software to dictate your blog. What I meant to say was “get CaaS rated”, because this certainly is an abbreviation that’s gaining massive momentum in the Voice/Unified Communications space and could be part of a survival strategy for Nortel.
If you’re not sure what it stands for then understand it’s really only the latest definition of Hosted or Network served voice solutions.
The idea behind CaaS is to enable the integration of communications capabilities into network-based services and applications. It originated from services like “click to call” or “click for assistance,” which have become commonplace on static Web pages. CaaS takes this a step further, delivering communications capabilities from directly within internal or public services to create an increasingly effective and inherently more effective communications and collaboration environment.
So what does this mean? Well for Nortel, who a mere month ago was wondering about their future, it could be a lifeline. For it’s leveraging not only its position in the carrier VoIP space, but also the growing trend towards software-based communications, launching its “Communications as a Service” (CaaS) Solution.
It’s services like this that will drive profitable business for all Service Providers, because it gives them something that “Adds Value”. As the network becomes more and more commoditised (and we all know what happens to the price of commodities), this might be a life saver for many.
