If you haven’t seen the Microsoft video “VoIP as you are”, it’s a must see.

It’s not only entertaining, but there are some very interesting but in some cases very subtle messages.  Microsoft truly send up the industry for its use of acronyms and have a nice dig at their competition.

But the main thing that stood out for me was their use of the expression “Traditional Voice Systems”.  As somebody who has worked in this industry for ever, (no I don’t mean since 1876, I mean through the migration from circuit switched PBX’s to IP voice technology), ”Traditional” for me has always been those stable TDM based phone systems.

But Microsoft refers to traditional as hardware based IP solutions.  The message is that software is the future (which they would) and that routers and switches is the past and now “Traditional”.

So this is what I want you to do.  Go get a coffee or beverage of your choice (within reason), click the link below, watch Dan Wilson and then post a comment and let us know what you think; do you think hardware is traditional?
